Fall has arrived and the sunshine will soon be replaced with rain clouds.

But a good-looking tan is just a 20-minute sunless tanning session away.

Jodi and Cal Blackmore took over Tropical Tan in April. The tanning salon is located in Ross Plaza in Silverdale.

The husband and wife duo began searching for a business to buy and Tropical Tan was the perfect fit.

“We’ve always wanted to own our own business and just started looking around town and through the process of elimination we got the tanning business,” Jodi said. “We liked this one a lot and it had a lot of potential.”

Jodi left her job as a newspaper office manager and Cal, a Prudential Realtor, devotes as much time as he can to the family business.

“Jodi loves people so this is a good thing,” Cal said. “We’re making a lot of friends.”

Jodi used to work at a family owned clothing store and saw the benefits of owning a small business. She then decided it was something she wanted to do one day.

“It is something I’ve always wanted,” Jodi said. “I saw the stress, but I also liked the lifestyle they had.”

Jodi and Cal knew little about the tanning business before buying Tropical Tan, but the couple read a lot of books and information about the subject and immensely enjoy the business.

“I had gone tanning before, but didn’t know a lot about it,” Jodi said.

Tropical Tan has 10 tanning beds, eight regular and two high performance beds. The regular beds have 28 or 32 bulbs and a person can lie in the sanitized bed for up to 20 minutes. The high performance beds, one lie-down and one stand-up bed, can only be set for up to 11 minutes.

“It gives you a better tan, faster,” Jodi said.

Customers do not need appointments to get that bronzy glow. Jodi said people can come to the Silverdale business and tan at their convenience.

“You just come in, get into an available bed and leave,” Jodi said with a smile. “A lot of people like to come in and pretend they’re at the beach.”

Tropical Tan offers something no other tanning salon in Silverdale has: a spa room. Jodi and Cal turned a former office space into a spa room complete with tropical music and soft lighting. Tropical Tan employs a couple of massage therapists who give massages, hot stone massages and offer body waxing.

Massage therapist Tracy Seegrist helped Jodi and Cal start the spa room. She worked part-time at Tropical Tan and was “instrumental” in offering massages.

“She’s been a wonderful help, helping us start the spa room,” Jodi said. “She was instrumental in making that happen.”

Tropical Tan massage therapist Sandy Armstrong also offers to bring chair massages to local businesses. She has traveled to one business and hopes to gain more clientele.

“Our therapist sets up her chair in a spare room and offers massages,” Jodi said.

Armstrong offers massages from 3 to 8 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays and Suzanne Lamont offers regular massages and hot stone massages from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Jodi and Cal are looking to hire more massage therapists and body waxing specialists.

Tropical Tan also sells tanning lotions and body care products. Jodi said they offer products at a reasonable price because she doesn’t want to charge people a price she would not pay herself.

“We offer a great deal on those because I can’t stand to charge a lot,” Jodi said.

Jodi and Cal said they have a lot of returning customers from when the previous owner had Tropical Tan, but they also have seen a lot of new faces.

“They are new to us but they’ve been coming here for a long time,” Jodi said.

Tropical Tan welcomes first-time tanners and returning customers. Jodi said entering a tanning bed for the first time can be scary, so she strives to make the customers feel comfortable and enjoy their tanning session.

“We strive to have a very friendly atmosphere,” she said. “We want to make people feel comfortable.”

Because Cal continues to work as a Realtor, Jodi spends a lot of time at the tanning salon, but he continues to play a vital role in the business.

“He’s my huge support,” Jodi said. “It was really supposed to be just me, but he is here all the time. It’s a family business.”

Jodi and Cal hope to continue to gain more customers and expand their business.

“It has its own rewards, but it is stressful,” Jodi said. “It’s been a great experience. Cal and I are learning a lot.”
