The 55,000-square foot Sportsman’s Warehouse, centrally located in Silverdale offers practically everything needed to enjoy the outdoors.

The re-modeled building (formerly HomeBase) can be found next to Costco.

The new Sportsman’s Warehouse offers a wide selection of hunting, fishing, camping, reloading, outerwear and footwear merchandise. With more than 1,000 firearms, 80,000 flies for fishing and more than 100 models each of tents, sleeping bags and back packs, the outdoor enthusiast is more than likely to find what they’re looking for.

“Not very many people can beat our prices and availability of merchandise,” said Joel Schaat, manager.

The store also carries a wide selection of binoculars, spotting scopes, archery, canoes, kayaks, crabbing and shrimping gear.

“We have everything you need for fishing and crabbing, including licenses and bait, Schaat said.

There are several animal head mounts on the walls in the store, which are mainly from customers or taxidermists. People are welcome to bring in their mounts to have displayed in the store.

Employees began setting up the store on April 30. The store opened for business on May 21 and held its grand opening on May 29.

“The grand opening was awesome, we had a great response,” Schaat said. “We had more than 2,000 people walk through the Carhartt SWAT Truck that was parked in front of the store.”

Sportsman’s Warehouse offers layaways through Wells Fargo Bank. Customers can obtain layaways for 6 or 12 months and when they pick up the merchandise it is put on a credit card they are given, which must be paid off within 90 days. The store also holds several free two-hour seminars throughout the year on hunting, fishing, GPS and camping. With 50 store employees, there always is somebody to help with questions.

“All the employees are so excited to be here and it gives them a chance to talk about things they like,” Schatt said.

Stu Utgaard and his family founded Sportsman’s Warehouse in 1986 and purchased the first retail store in Midvale, Utah. Store locations can be found throughout the West and Midwest.

The Silverdale store is the third in the state — the others are located in Spokane and Kennewick. There are several locations in Seattle that will open shortly, including a location in Federal Way and another at Alderwood in Lynnwood that is expected to open this summer.

Schaat has been with the company for three years and prior to becoming store manager of the Silverdale location he managed the camping department at the Kennewick store.

“We’ve had a great response and we have a great location where people don’t have to drive a long ways,” Schaat said.
