‘Modern Millie’ tailor made for BPA’s Camp Broadway

Teenage theater troupe presents its summer production July 30 through
Aug. 3 on Bainbridge.
There are more than a few things that kids today can learn from little miss Millie Dillmount. Not all of them are good, of course, but they are many.
Perhaps that’s part of the reason behind multiple Kitsap productions of the 1920’s coming-of-age story this year. Or maybe the show is just that good.
Jessica Low, director of the Bainbridge Performing Arts Camp Broadway production of “Thoroughly Modern Millie,” notes it as one of those shows that’s got it all — at least everything you could ask for in musical theater.
It’s got the madcap music, kooky characters and frisky flapper dancing, which provide students the opportunity to take their collective singing, acting and dancing skills to the next level, Low said. All of those musical theater skill sets seem to mesh in this show.
On the acting side there’s over-the-top characters and plot details like Mrs. Meers (played by Jacqui Stewart) and her involvement in the underground Asian slave trade matched with the real-life tenderness of the love story between the country-turned-city girl Millie and the dashing paperclip salesman (Claire Hosterman and Lucas Stewart respectively).
And of course, the music is quintessential broadway — big bands, big choruses and even bigger dance numbers.
To that end, BPA’s Camp Broadway troupe has joined forces with summer students from the Bainbridge Dance Center, collaborating on an original set of “Modern Millie” choreography designed by Jill Leversee.
