What might get you questioned for suspicious behavior any other day of the year could win you a quirky title this Saturday, when the 22nd annual Seagull Calling Contest joins forces with the second annual Kitsap Harbor Festival .“It’s quite strange,” said Port Orchard Police Chief Al Townsend, a three-time former calling contest judge. “Usually the most odd people do the best, and there are plenty of odd people there for it. The calling contest has been featured on late night network comedy shows, and is likely the only event of its kind, said Coreen Haydock Johnson, executive director of Port Orchard’s chamber of commerce.

Jun 01 2010, 2:34 PM

Do they use more traditionally organic/sustainable growing methods? Do they respect the land and animals they are raising? Do they use chemical fertilizers and pesticides?

How to start your own seedling | In Your Backyard
Jun 15 2010, 12:10 PM
Though starting your own seedlings can be rewarding, it takes lots of time. Once seedlings are started they need daily care. If you are short of time or away frequently the latter is for you. Seedlings also take up indoor space protected from animals and small children. This year you may want to buy bedding or mature plants from a commercial grower. This isn’t considered cheating and guarantees results. If you are going to start seeds, the first thing you want to do is check the gestation times on your seed packages. Count back from the date of your last expected frost. This will give you a planting date. Gestation is usually a six- to eight-week period, each plant is on its own schedule. Starting your seedlings too early results in long stringy weak plants.
