Produce offers a good introduction to eating seasonally and is an excellent way to learn about local agriculture. One of the main benefits that I find to purchasing locally grown foods is that I can ask the farmer or producer exactly what went into the process of the food, and perhaps even visit the farm. Do they use more traditionally organic/sustainable growing methods? Do they respect the land and animals they are raising? Do they use chemical fertilizers and pesticides?

For more information, visit robykinggalleries.com. - Jennifer Morris/Staff Photo Jun 08 2010, 3:04 PM In only a matter of minutes, Max Hayslette can be many different people: A small-town, self-termed “hillbilly” with roots in company-owned Rupert, West Virginia; a martini man, who orders his Bombay Sapphire “with a twist” as if it were a line penned by Ian Fleming; and a painter who, as he puts it, was born at the wrong time, an avant-gardist in a landscaped world who would rather sip his Bombay in a smoky Paris lounge on the cusp of the 1920s, talking design with Walter Gropius, than be almost anywhere else.

How to start your own seedling | In Your Backyard
From the Ground Up | Questions or comments? Contact columnist Pam Tempelmayr at whalebonestudio@embarqmail.com. - File photo Jun 15 2010, 12:10 PM Though starting your own seedlings can be rewarding, it takes lots of time. Once seedlings are started they need daily care. If you are short of time or away frequently the latter is for you. Seedlings also take up indoor space protected from animals and small children. This year you may want to buy bedding or mature plants from a commercial grower. This isn’t considered cheating and guarantees results.

If you are going to start seeds, the first thing you want to do is check the gestation times on your seed packages. Count back from the date of your last expected frost. This will give you a planting date. Gestation is usually a six- to eight-week period, each plant is on its own schedule. Starting your seedlings too early results in long stringy weak plants.
