Fugitive killed himself following police chase
December 17, 2010 · Updated 3:11 PM
A fugitive killed last week in Bremerton after a police chase died by committing suicide with a handgun.
According to results of a coroner's investigation released Wednesday by the Washington State Patrol, Kyle L. Hoapili, 27, of Port Orchard, killed himself after shooting at Bremerton police officers following a chase begun by Kitsap County sheriff's deputies. The State Patrol is conducting the investigation.
Hoapili was found dead behind a residence in the 2100 block of Fifth Street. No officers were injured.
Hoapili had two felony warrants at the time of his death, said Trooper Todd Bartolac. One was issued by the state Department of Corrections for a parole violation, the other was an arrest warrant issued in Kitsap County for kidnapping.
Bartolac said the coroner's report was released to shed light on the incident for the public, but other details -- such as why deputies initiated the stop -- would be released later to ensure the integrity of the inquiry.
"It's an ongoing investigation, and we don't want to compromise it by letting information out before everything is all squared away," Bartolac said.
