Man brings WWII grenade into Silverdale sheriff’s office

The Silverdale Kitsap County Sheriff’s office was locked down and blocked off March 1 after a man brought in a high explosive World War II-era grenade for disposal.

At about 2 p.m., a 69-year-old Central Kitsap resident brought the grenade and other old weapons to the sheriff’s office after cleaning the belongings of his father who had recently died, according to reports from sheriff’s deputies. People inside the office moved to the back of the building, the front door was locked and the parking lot was blocked off to prevent people from approaching the office.

The man told deputies he wasn’t sure what to do with them.

The grenade was brought to the Bremerton Police Firing Range to make sure it was safe. The firing pin was in a cocked position as if it had not been used and was ready to fire. All of the grenade parts were still intact.

The 69-year-old was told if he comes across such weapons again, he should call 911 and not handle it.
