Shannon Lubetich, a senior at Central Kitsap High School, was selected from a pool of 3.2 million seniors nationwide as a candidate for the 2011 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program.

More than 3,000 graduating seniors across the nation were announced in January as candidates for the academic achievement award that began in 1964 by President Lyndon Johnson. Lubetich, 17, is the only candidate from Central Kitsap. There are 52 students selected from Washington state. She is a member of the school’s Knowledge Bowl team and treasurer of Key Club. She has also been involved in Destina-tion ImagiNation, a team problem-solving competition, since sixth grade. Students are selected for the award based on College Board SAT or ACT Assessment scores. The department will announce semi-finalists in April and winners in May.
