Strakeljahn leads in Bremerton Port race
November 8, 2011 · 8:59 PM
The preliminary results of the Nov. 8 elections are in, and Axel Strakeljahn has appears to have won the seat for Port of Bremerton Commissioner District 3 beating his opponent 51 to 47 percent.
With an estimated 25,000 ballots left to count, the unofficial results will be updated on Nov. 9. The election will be certified on Nov. 29.
The Port of Bremerton marina, airport, and industrial region is a major economic engine of the city. Its commissioner will have the continued duty of attracting business and industry to Kitsap County. At the top of this agenda is attracting Boeing and its 737 plant to the South Kitsap Industrial area.
Also of concern to Strakeljahn will be the handling of Safe Boat contracts. The lease between the Port of Bremerton and the boat manufacturing company is scheduled to expire in 2012. Earlier this year, Safe Boats lost a $1.8 million Coast Guard contract to a competitor company.
Safe Boats was in talks for a major expansion in the port when the news hit. The expansion, which included repairs to a boat dock and a brand new manufacturing building, and would total almost $11 million dollars are still in discussion as of this election.
