A South Kitsap High School student is in surgery after being struck by a car Friday morning.

Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Scott Wilson said the 15-year-old female was transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle after she sustained critical injuries this morning after being struck by a car. As of 4:30 p.m. Friday, Wilson reported she was out of surgery with “injuries that are considered life threatening.”

The student was crossing Jackson Avenue between SE Berger Lane and SE Azalea Avenue, where her school bus stop is located. Wilson said she was hit by a 52-year-old South Kitsap man who was driving a 2006 Ford Taurus just before 7 a.m. There is no crosswalk in the area where she was struck.

The driver remained at the scene and was cooperative with investigators. According to Wilson, they reported there the driver’s speed, alcohol and drugs were not an issue with the incident.

Wilson said Jackson Avenue was closed where the incident occurred until about 10:40 a.m.

This story will be updated as information becomes available.
