Music school seeking children’s submissions for benefit art show

Adults aren’t the only ones with artistic talent and a local music and dance school is determined to prove it.

The Washington Academy of Music and Dance is currently accepting submissions from students in kindergarten through 12th grade for a student art show. The show will benefit the Bremerton branch of the Boys & Girls Club.

“It serves the community and gives the kids a chance to show off their artwork,” said Rick Cox, director of the Washington Academy of Music and Dance.

Cox currently has more than 25 pieces of artwork ranging from watercolors to unique collages. All sizes and types of work are accepted and are not required to be framed. If the Washington Academy of Music and Dance receives enough art submissions, the benefit art show will be from 5-7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, at the music school on Bucklin Hill Road in Silverdale.

“We wanted to try it and see how it goes,” Cox said. “We hope to make it an annual event.”

Billie Schmidt, Bremerton branch director of the Boys & Girls Club, is excited that the Washington Academy of Music and Dance plans to host a children’s art show benefiting the Boys & Girls Club.

“I think it’s wonderful,” she said. “The community support we have in the Bremerton area is just outstanding.”

Artwork will be sold for $15-$25 a piece and all proceeds go to the Boys & Girls Club. Schmidt said the money will be put toward the Boys & Girls Club’s art programs.

“Anything helps,” she said. “It’s wonderful to have community members help. It helps our programs stay afloat.”

If the Washington Academy of Music and Dance does not receive enough artwork submissions, the art show benefiting the Boys & Girls Club will not take place. Students in kindergarten through 12th grade may submit their artwork to the Washington Academy of Music and Dance located at 3100 Bucklin Hill Road, Suite 116, in Silverdale or Artists’ Edge in Poulsbo by Monday, Oct. 15. If they do not receive enough artwork for this month’s event, the Washington Academy of Music and Dance plans to host the benefit art show in April.
