Plenty of tails will be wagging at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds Saturday.

The Kitsap Humane Society and Apple Tree Cove Animal Hospital are hosting the 14th annual PetsWALK from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. this Saturday, June 2, at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds.

Teams and individuals will collect monetary donations prior to the event and participate in a 1k or 5k walk. Money raised at PetsWALK will benefit the Kitsap Humane Society.

“The money raised from PetsWALK goes toward all the programs at the shelter and the thousands of animals we care for each year,” said Dana Lerma, Kitsap Humane Society development manager.

One particular dog currently housed at the shelter was shot in the leg and may have that leg amputated. The animal also will need to undergo rehabilitation after losing the leg. Money raised at PetsWALK will help fund the dog’s possible surgery and rehabilitation as well as services for thousands of other animals.

Aside from the 1k and 5k walks, pets and owners can participate in a frisbee contest, pet talent contest and a pet costume contest. Pets and owners also can receive professional instruction and take their pets through an agility course.

“People have an opportunity to go through (the agility course) with professional instruction,” Lerma said. “That’s always a lot of fun.”

Various canine search and rescue teams will do demonstrations throughout the day. The Apple Tree Cove Animal Hospital will host a microchip clinic and give rabies vaccinations. The HomeAgain microchip costs $30 and vaccinations are $5. The Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor veterinary clinic will offer pet nail trimming for $5. They also will brush pets’ teeth for free. Various businesses will set up booths for a vendor fair at PetsWALK.

“It’s fun for the whole family,” Lerma said.

Pets of all types and sizes are welcome at PetsWALK. A pot-bellied pig attended the event last year. The 2006 event raised more than $25,000 for the animal shelter.

“We get all types of animals,” Lerma said. “We’ve had pot-bellied pigs and goats. We will have llamas this year.”

Kitsap Humane Society animals will be available for adoption Saturday. PetsWALK takes place Saturday rain or shine.

“We’ve had PetsWALK with the wind blowing and rain sleeting sideways,” Lerma chuckled.

Those interested in attending PetsWALK can download a registration form online at www.kitsaphumane.org or contact the Kitsap Humane Society events department at (360) 692-6977 ext. 113.
