Multiple northbound and southbound lanes of State Route 3 will be closed during the night beginning today due to demolition work that will be conducted on the Kitsap Mall and Waaga Way overpasses.

Demolition work on the Waaga Way overpass begins tonight and will require northbound lanes to be closed from 10 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. and southbound closures from 11:30 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. Work on the Kitsap Mall overpass will cause closures during the same times on Thursday and Friday night.

John LeFotu, Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) assistant project engineer, said motorists will experience delays with the most significant this evening where traffic will be completely detoured off SR 3 and onto local streets.

The construction work will safely demolish existing traffic barriers and overhangs from the two bridges, and will add safety rails, walkways for pedestrians and bike lanes.

The work is part of a project designed to improve traffic conditions between SR 3 and State Route 303. Costs for the project are estimated at $16.7 million. It is expected to be completed in September 2007.
