Commissioners OK Harrison’s helipad

PORT ORCHARD — In a unanimous vote Monday morning, Kitsap County commissioners agreed with the hearing examiner’s decision to allow the construction of a helicopter landing pad at Harrison Silverdale.

Harrison Medical Center has the go-ahead now to build a helipad in the southwest corner of its campus at the intersection of Ridgetop Boulevard and Myhre Road.

In September last year, a group of Tracyton Boulevard residents filed an appeal of the original hearing examiner’s decision and a hearing on the matter was held Feb. 13. The petitioners cited safety as their primary concern. Helicopter landings and take offs would be distracting to drivers at the busy intersection and would be a hazard to pedestrians, especially school children walking home from Ridgetop Junior High School.

According to Harrison’s proposal, the site was appropriate because of its proximity to the emergency department of its Silverdale building.

Central Kitsap first responders also testified in favor of the proposed helipad in last month’s hearing.
