Woodlands takes top spot in Cedar tourney

First place in the Cedar senior boys basketball tournament eluded the Spartans by seven points.

The team led against Woodlands for the first half of the final. However, the Spartans hit foul trouble in the last period.

“We had a few guys foul out late in the game,” said coach Rick Hart.

Once the buzzer rang, Woodlands was up by seven points — 73 to 66.

Hart said despite the loss, the team played well.

“They did a really good job on defence,” said Hart.

He said the outcome of the game would have been different if the team had kept fouls down, something they will work on for the next matchup.

The Spartans took on Brooks Senior High School from Powell River in their first game. The home team walked off the court with an impressive 30-point victory — 76 to 46.

The team’s second win came against Robert Bateman Secondary School from Abbotsford. The final score ended at 70 to 59.

Sam Skagfeld and Davis Stupich were selected most valuable players from the two-day tournament, which ran Friday and Saturday.

The Spartans play a home game in league play today at 6 p.m.
