A weekend spent 'on the trail'

The nearly decade-long process to create a series of trails along the Clear Creek corridor will probably never be finished.

But it’s finished enough to dedicate.

The community task force behind developing the system is holding dedication activities this weekend employing this schedule:

Saturday, Oct. 5:

l 11 a.m. — Pedestrian bridge/restroom dedication, behind Ross Plaza, east bank.

l 10 a.m.-4 p.m. — Native plant & bird feeder sale, including talks by representatives of Watershed Gardens, Wild Birds Unlimited, Master Gardeners, Noxious Weed Advisors. At Gateway/Rotary Park.

l Noon-4 p.m. — “Salmon Run” display & silent auction of cardboard cut-out salmon, sponsored by Starbucks Coffee, other events. At Red Barn, off Levin Road, off Bucklin Hill Road.

l Noon-3 p.m. — Children’s activities at Red Barn.

l Noon — Guided trail walk by Phyllis Meyers, Department of Fisheries biologist. Behind All Star Lanes.

l 1-3 p.m. — Historic Petersen Farm tour by Gerry Petersen, Petersen Lane, off east end of Trigger Avenue.

l 1:30 p.m. — “John Levine” historic character portrayal by Dan Engelhard at Petersen Farm (see above).

l 2:45 p.m. — Suquamish heritage presentation/tribal dancing, with Rob Purser, Suquamish Fisheries, Suquamish Dancers. Red Barn.

l 3:30 p.m. — Salmon bake fundraiser, $5 per person, $15 per family, sponsored by the Suquamish Tribe and OC Culinary Department. Red Barn.

Sunday, Oct. 6:

l Noon-4 p.m. — Clear Creek Interpretive Center (Red Barn) opens with exhibits, displays, presentations, walk-thru wild salmon.

l Noon-3 p.m. — “How clear is Clear Creek?” with children’s activities and stream monitoring with Kitsap stream specialists. Red Barn.

l Noon-4 p.m. — “Salmon Run” cut-outs, display and silent auction. Red Barn.

l 12:15 p.m. — Mosquito Fleet presentation, Old Mill Park, west of Red Barn.

l 12:45 p.m. — Audubon Society bird survey presentation. Old Mill Park shoreline.

l 1:15 p.m. — Guided trail walk, shoreline to estuary, with Faye Linger, Audubon Society, and Paul Dorn, Fisheries biologist. Old Mill Park.

l 1-3 p.m. — Historic Petersen Farm tour with Gerry Petersen. Petersen Lane.

l 1:30 p.m. — “John Levine” historic character portrayal by Dan Engelhard. Petersen Lane.

l 2:30-4 p.m. — Presentation “Feasting on Flotsam: Eating Between Ocean, Field and Forest” by Jennifer Hahn. Red Barn.
