Memorial Day events planned

This Monday, area organizations host Memorial Day events honoring those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

l Fleet Reserve Association Branch 29 is hosting its Memorial Day ceremony, 11 a.m. at Forest Lawn Cemetery at 5409 Kitsap Way, Bremerton.

Guest speaker is Cmdr. James Sharrett, Naval Hospital Bremerton Chaplain. A wreath laying ceremony will be done by both Fleet Reserve Officers and Ladies Auxiliary.

l Monday afternoon VFW Post #239 will host its event at 1 p.m. at Ivy Green Cemetery at 12th Street and Naval Avenue in Bremerton. It will include VFW District 4 Color Guard. The Sweet Adelines will perform patriotic songs and a local church choir will perform.

l The Retsil Veterans Home, which usually hosts the county’s largest Memorial Day event, is having a private ceremony in the chapel for residents. The larger ceremony has been cancelled because of a renovation project at the facility.

l Bremerton-Olympic Peninsula Council of Navy League will hold their Memorial Day ceremony on board the Vietnam-era destroyer USS Turner Joy on the Bremerton waterfront. The event is free to the public and will start at 10 a.m., Monday, May 26, with a Color Guard provided by the Sea Cadets of Kitsap Battalion. The Sea Cadets will also be “manning the rails” as guests arrive on board. The Navy League encourages attendees to wear red, white & blue and bring a flag to wave.
