Amanda Rohr is was one of five new firefighters that were recently recruited by Central Kitsap Fire & Rescue.

Rohr along with Mark Giannobile, Jeff Wallis, Kevin Best and Doug Bekenyi were hired in the spring. As with all new recruits, they have to endure a year-long probationary period.

“They do this to test the individual to see if they fit in,” Rohr said.

Rohr joined the CKFR team on April 1 and graduated June 18 from Bates Fire Academy. She was the only female to graduate on that day.

“I love this job, I can’t even tell you how much I like it,” Rohr said. “My husband is so supportive. It’s been a long road and I couldn’t have done it without him,” she said.

Before becoming a firefighter, Rohr was a restaurant manager at The Edgewater Hotel in Seattle.

“It was fine, I just felt (the restaurant business) wasn’t very rewarding,” Rohr said. “When I get home from work now, I’m happy.”

She is a 1994 graduate of Olympic High School and has also served in the Army Reserve for eight years.

Before Rohr was hired, she was a Firefighter In Training (FIT) student for CKFR, so she was already familiar with the crew.

“The guys here are great, we get along so well,” she said.

CKFR also recruited firefighters Jason Reed and Joshua Materi on January 1.
