Rubber ducky, you're the one
June 11, 2008 · Updated 1:17 PM
No wind and a slack tide combined for a slow 11th annual Great Kitsap Duck Race but that didnt bother the events organizers.
It took a little longer than last years 7 minute record, said race president Steve Slaton. But it was still an excellent race.
Once again there was no winner of the $1 million grand prize which would have been paid out if one of the six random ducks out of the field of 22,000 crossed the finish line first.
Melinda Harmon of Gig Harbor was the big winner, choosing a Toyota Tacoma truck donated by Heartland Toyota over a Toyota Echo.
Slaton said there were approximately 19,000 of the sunglasses-wearing rubber ducks sold, raising an estimated $80,000 for the Silverdale Rotary Club for its charitable causes.
Our goal was to sell all 22,000, Slaton said. 19,000 is what we sold last year and we were hoping for an increase.
Afterwards, volunteers from the Navy, Marines, Central Kitsap Fire & Rescue and the Silverdale Rotary Club helped clean up the ducks to prepare them for their next race.
The top five winners were:
First prize of a Toyota Tacoma truck donated by Heartland Toyota with a bedliner by Line-X went to Melinda Harmon of Gig Harbor.
