WSDOT receives an earful about interchange proposal

The state Department of Transportation asked for input on the State Route 3/303 project, and they did receive.

WSDOT had a public hearing Wednesday evening at the Silverdale Community Center about the proposed interchange. The interchange is designed to move the traffic congestion caused by cars going to and from SR 3 and 303 from Kitsap Mall Boulevard to an intersection that would link the two state routes more efficiently, said Nancy Boyd, project engineer.

The plans include widening the SR 303 overpass over SR 3 to create six lanes that would be regulated by a traffic signal. The plan includes a new ramp that will be built on northbound SR 3 to intersect with Kitsap Mall Boulevard. A second ramp will provide a direct link to eastbound SR 303. The current ramp that connects Kitsap Mall Boulevard and northbound SR 3 would be removed.

The plan includes traffic signals at the new Kitsap Mall Boulevard off-ramp, on Clear Creek Road (which will have a new extension) and the overpass on SR 303.

The new design should be able to handle the expected increased traffic in Silverdale for the next 25 years. The project is expected to be put out for bid in January 2005 and construction should begin that spring. If all goes as planned, the interchange should be complete by November 2006, according to the WSDOTÂ’s project outline.
