A 22-year-old Bremerton man is dead and four others were taken to area hospitals after the car the five were in collided head-on with a tree Sunday afternoon in Silverdale.
The driver, identified as a 17-year-old girl from Puyallup, was reportedly driving at a high rate of speed on Silverdale Loop Road when investigators say she failed to make it around a sharp 90-degree bend as she was headed toward Anderson Hill Road. All of the people in the car were wearing their seatbelts.
The man, identified as Richard Doss, was sitting in the middle of the back seat at the time of the crash. He died at the scene from what Washington State Patrol trooper Brian George described as massive abdominal trauma.
He said the driver, who was taken to Harrison Hospital in Bremerton for hand, back and neck injuries, was arrested for vehicular homicide and vehicular assault. She is currently not in jail as investigators continue to determine the cause of the crash. Alcohol was not a factor.
Another passenger, a 23-year-old Bremerton man, was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with severe abdominal trauma.
A 16-year-old Puyallup boy and another 17-year-old Puyallup girl were also taken to Harrison Hospital for treatment.
