Principal sought for alternative program

When the Central Kitsap School district’s Title I/Learning Assistance Program coordinator Martha Skinner retires this summer, the district will not hire a replacement. Instead, in a reshuffle of staff positions, Superintendent Greg Lynch has decided to shift those job responsibilities to David Sours, the district’s director of student services.

The money in the personnel budget used to pay the Title I/LAP coordinator will be shifted to fund an alternative school principal who will oversee the district’s three alternative secondary schools, West Side Alternative High School, East Side Alternative High School and New Frontiers Secondary School, Lynch told the Central Kitsap School District Board of Directors on Wednesday night. Lynch provided the board with a list of 10 school districts of comparable size, all of which had an alternative school principal.

The alternative school principal also will oversee summer school and the off-campus instruction program.

The alternative schools fall under the office of secondary teaching and learning, while summer school and the off-campus instruction program are under the director of student services.

Lynch said he will appoint the new alternative school principal this week. Although the board did not vote on the issue, it will have final approval as it does on all district hires, said Julie Goldsmith, director of secondary teaching and learning. Goldsmith will supervise the alternative school principal. She already oversees the secondary school principals, counselors and the district athletic coordinator, Mike Acres.

Goldsmith has been assisting Lynch in the process of finding someone to fill the new position.

“It is a new position, but (Lynch) reorganized it so that the money is not an additional salary,” she said. “He’s re-shifted responsibilities.”

The new job position was announced to all the in-district administrators so those in-district can apply first. If there were no applicants, the job search would have been opened to non-district employees.

“We did have some internal interest,” Goldsmith said.
