Town hall forum tackles underage drinking

Kitsap County is sponsoring a town hall meeting to discuss underage drinking next week. The meeting is part of a national effort of such community gatherings, with 61 scheduled in Washington state alone.

The meeting is from 6 to 8 p.m. March 28 at the Jackson Park Community Center Assembly Hall.

“This is a national and statewide opportunity to raise community awareness,” said Mary Ellen de la Peña, prevention service coordinator. “It makes it clear that this is something that we all need to be understanding and addressing.”

The event is intended as an opportunity to talk about how the community can better support the healthy development of young people and promote a safe environment in Kitsap County.

“It would be wonderful if we had local data that would tell us what was going on,” de la Peña said. “Except our school districts haven’t participated in getting that data.”
