Habitat commemorates National Day of Service and Remembrance
Volunteers with Habitat for Humanity of Kitsap County will commemorate the Sept. 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance on Wednesday, Sept. 11, by building a new picnic shelter at Bataan Park in East Bremerton.
From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sept. 11, volunteers will be constructing the new shelter, as well as cleaning up areas of Bataan Park. The day’s activities also include a short lunchtime program, with members of the local Filipino-American community, to dedicate the new shelter in memory of those who fell during the Sept. 11 attacks, as well as those who fell during the Bataan Death March in 1942. Limited space is available for additional volunteers, but the community is encouraged to come to the lunchtime program at 12:30 p.m.
“We are excited to build a new shelter and commemorate the space with our community on Sept. 11,” said Daryl Daugs, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity of Kitsap County. “We wanted to find a different way to positively impact our community through service, but also bring people together on a day that has been so tragic in our history.”
Throughout the U.S., Habitat for Humanity affiliates are joining hundreds of other organizations for the Sept. 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance. The organizations will pay tribute to those who lost their lives that day, and those who rose in service afterward, through community based service projects.
“While more than a decade has passed since the tragic events of Sept. 11, the deep desire to help those in need continues to grow stronger,” said Jonathan Reckford, CEO of Habitat for Humanity International. “We urge everyone to participate in the National Day of Service and Remembrance to honor those who were affected by the tragedy.”
Sept. 11 was designated a national day of service by the 2009 Kennedy Serve America Act. The Corporation for National and Community Service leads the annual event, working with MyGoodDeed and hundreds of nonprofit groups, faith-based organizations, and schools and businesses nationwide.
