Restaurant closed for the last week; should open today.

Dairy Queen on Ridgetop Boulevard in Silverdale has been closed for a week following a fire behind the deep fat fryer, according to Central Kitsap Fire & Rescue (CKFR).

CKFR and Navy Region Northwest Fire and Emergency Services firefighters responded to the two-alarm fire at about 9:45 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25.

The restaurant’s manager called 911 as an employee tried to extinguish the blaze with a fire extinguisher.

CKFR firefighters arrived on scene within four minutes and found flames visible from the kitchen and heavy black smoke coming from the roof vents. Crews quickly extinguished the blaze, which extended behind the deep fat fryer and walls, with dry chemical fire extinguishers. They then cleared smoke from the building using positive pressure ventilation techniques.

The Kitsap County Fire Marshal’s Office said the fire started as a result of grease build-up behind the fryer. The damage is estimated at about $20,000. A restaurant employee said they plan to open for business today.
