County to blast at quarry
April 30, 2009 · 2:07 PM
A contractor for Kitsap County Public Works is blasting at the county’s quarry near Wildcat Lake the week of May 4-8 or 11-15. McCallum Rock Drilling Inc. of Chehalis is doing the work under a contract with the county.
“The blast will produce rock materials that are used for building and maintaining county roads,” said John James, county surveyor.
The area is remote and no homes or commercial buildings are located within a half-mile of the blast location.
The blast will occur between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Ten minutes prior to, and immediately after each blast, all access to the area is restricted to prevent unauthorized entry. An air horn, audible to at least one half-mile from the blast, is used as a warning. The five-minute warning consists of a blast of five seconds. On the stroke of every minute of the countdown there will be five-second blast until detonation.
The all-clear signal is one long blast (20 seconds) from the air horn. The actual blast work will be completed in one day.
