Silverdale residents attending Whaling Days this weekend will have a chance to weigh in on cityhood.

Specifically, those who live in the communities at the south end of Chico Way and the east side of Island Lake are being polled as to whether they would want to be included in the map of a proposed city of Silverdale.

“It’s important we do it,” said Randy Biegenwald, co-chairman of Citizens United for Silverdale, Inc. “We can’t just spring it on them.”

Incorporation efforts have failed twice before, but organizers say they are taking a more precise approach this time, hoping to drum up support where it exists and potentially cut out communities that are opposed to being part of the proposed city.

Biegenwald and Co-Chairman Hank Mann-Sykes said a map of the proposed city could be drawn by the end of the year.

The population of Silverdale is about 17,000, according to county figures provided by Mann-Sykes.
