Taxes for roads, not racetracks

As everyone is preparing to go to the polls and our tax dollars are on everyone’s mind, be aware that there is another grab being prepared to get our tax dollars. International Speedway Corp. (ISC), a multi-billion dollar Florida company, is lobbying our legislators for public funding to subsidize their racetrack, approximately $250 million, for starters.

ISC is working behind the scenes in Olympia and they are delaying their proposal to the legislature until they can slip it in as close to the January session as possible, leaving taxpayers little time to study and rebut their rosy projections on cost, traffic, and environmental impact.

If you object to being asked to pay for another public venue for a corporate for-profit company, write a letter to your legislator, or go to our Web site, www.check-info.org and sign our online petition. Our tax dollars should go to Washington state’s roads, schools and services, not be used for corporate welfare. Our own State Treasurer, Michael Murphy, has said, “no public funding should be used to help finance the project.”
