Kelstrup (37 points) leads Trojan boys past CK

"Geoff Kelstrup erupted for a career-high 37 points to lead the Olympic High School boys basketball team to a snow-delayed 71-50 victory over Central Kitsap in the Olympic League finale for both teams.The game was to be played Friday night, but was switched to Saturday afternoon after snow canceled school in the Central Kitsap School District Friday.The Trojans broke the game open in the second quarter, pulling away from a 16-all tie with a 20-8 spurt. Oly finished its final Olympic League season with a 6-10 league mark (8-12 overall) and missed the West Central District playoffs for the first time in three years. CK finished 2-14 and 4-16.Both teams will switch to the Narrows League Bridge Division beginning next winter.Senior Casey Manchester supported Kelstrup, a junior, with 14 points for Oly. Senior Dyame Lemming was the only CK player in double figures, with 17 points.Blaine 71, Klahowya 56: The Eagles' season ended at 2-20 with the road loss to Blaine, leaving them one win short of a Bi-District tournament berth. No details were reported.Girls basketballSophomore Adria Layne led all scorers with 21 points as Central Kitsap tuned up for tonight's West Central District tournament opener by topping Olympic 59-36 Saturday afternoon at Oly.The Cougars, who play fourth-ranked Enumclaw tonight in a first-round WCD game, jumped out to a 16-6 lead after one quarter, but allowed the host Trojans to get back into the game. They outscored Oly 37-19 in the second half for the final 23-point winning margin.Senior Cassie Llewellyn scored 17 points for CK, while junior Tiffany Jess led Troy with 16 points.SwimmingDivers Josh Gilbert and Steve Evans finished fifth and seventh, respectively, pulling their Central Kitsap team into a tie for 23rd in the state Class 4A meet at Federal Way.Puyallup's Kellen Harkness was the class of the field, piling up 500.05 points to win the gold medal in the 1-meter event. But Gilbert and Evans were part of a strong West Sound showing, finishing just behind North Kitsap's Patrick White, who was the fourth-place finisher at 345.45. Gilbert totaled 338.35 and Evans 325.65. Both are seniors.Olympic sophomore Patrick Fitzgerald made the top 16 in the backstroke and turned in a time of 58.11 seconds in the consolation heat, good for a 16th-place finish.CK's Erik Henne, a finalist in the breaststroke last year, was disqualified out of this year's competition in the same event.Garfield won the team title with 183 points. CK's total was 26.WrestlingKlahowya's Tom Meier fought his way to an eighth-place medal in the 160-pound bracket of the Class 2A Mat Classic XIII at the Tacoma Dome, compiling a 2-3 record for the weekend.After losing his opening match, Meier won back-to-back decisions to get into the medals, beating Deer Park's Patrick Marshall 7-5 in overtime and shutting out Brian Stiles of state 2A team champion Washougal 3-0. In the match for the seventh and eight placements, Meier was out-pointed by Connell's Jimmy Orozco, 21-12. "
