Lady Cougs down but not out

PUYALLUP — The Central Kitsap girls basketball team had dinner at the McDermott household last night.

It wasn’t to celebrate a long awaited state berth. After CK’s 37-25 loss to Kentlake Thursday at Rogers High School, the Lady Cougs didn’t feel much like celebrating. But despite the loss, CK (20-4) is still in the hunt for a state berth and will fight with Lincoln for the seventh and final spot at the WIAA 4A State Basketball Tournament tonight at 6 p.m. at Foss High School in Tacoma.

So the reason for the dinner?

CK and Lincoln have faced off twice already this season, with CK winning 48-37 on Dec. 10 but falling 60-44 on Feb. 19 in the Narrows League title game. Before their win, the Lady Cougs held a team dinner at the McDermott’s (Ariel is a CK junior on the team). But before the loss, there was no dinner.

So this time, CK isn’t taking any chances.

In the loss to Kentlake (22-3), the Lady Cougs struggled to find their shot. After jumping ahead early 4-0 within the first two minutes of play, the Lady Falcons held CK scoreless for the next four minutes, allowing Kentlake to pull ahead 9-4 early.
