548 of the nations best seventh- and eighth-grade wrestlers representing 27 different states competed in Indianapolis last weekend in the USA Wrestling Freestyle & Greco Roman Schoolboy Duals National Championships.
Team Washington took 27 wrestlers from across the state. Kitsap County wrestlers Adam Burchett (70 pounds; 7th grade; Klahowya), Jake Velarde (84 pounds; 7th Grade, Kingston), Cody Yeik (98 pounds; 8th Grade, Fairview Jr. High), Caleb O’Halek (152 pounds; 8th Grade, Fairview) were named to the team.
Team Washington placed sixth in the freestyle wrestling competition and ninth in the Greco-Roman competition.
Branden Yeik will join the Team Washington Cadet Team (15- and 16-year-olds) to compete in the USA Wrestling Cadet Freestyle & Greco Roman Wrestling National Tournament in Kansas City, Mo., this weekend. The team is coached by Central Kitsap wrestling coach Mike Harter and Merle Crockett of the Southwest Washington Wrestling Club.
